Two experienced Medcall nurses share what they wish they'd known from day one.

Walking into a new facility can feel daunting — different systems, different people, different layout. But with a few practical habits, agency nurses say the transition becomes second nature. We spoke to Karen and Jane, both experienced agency nurses with Medcall, about the small things that make a big difference.

Tip 1: Get the lay of the land

Karen's first move at every new facility is the same: she asks for a map.

"I go to the manager, introduce myself, and ask for a map with all the room numbers, fire extinguishers, everything. They often say they've never been asked that before. But if I'm called somewhere for an emergency, I look straight at that map and I know where I'm going."

She colour-codes the map with different pens and quickly learns the layout. She's even added room numbers to drug trolley trays when they were missing — something the permanent staff later adopted across the whole facility.

Tip 2: Sort your access on day one

Jane's biggest tip? Don't leave your logins and access to chance.

"When you go to different facilities, it's like anyone starting a new job — you need your logins. Some places don't give agency nurses a facility login for emails or system access, and that can really hold you up."

She's been in situations where she needed to send a patient to hospital but didn't have access to print medication charts or transfer documentation. Her advice: ask for everything upfront.

"They should provide you with the tools of your trade — which is access. If you can print medication charts, files, and transfer documents, your job becomes so much easier. Time is a key factor, because anything can happen in those minutes."
